What's in a Name?
Date published: June 6, 2005
I used to get really mad when someone wouldn't get my name right. I blow it off now...but really...is my name that tough to spell or say?
My mom named me Marian because it wasn't common like Mary and it sounds nice. I remember being about 4 years old and learning to write my name. I couldn't read, my mom couldn't figure out how to to teach me to read, and I was really mad my first day of school that they didn't sit down and teach us right then and there.
That said, we come back to my name. I've had it mispronounced a lot - my name is not Maryann like the brunette on Gilligan's Island, it's not Mary or Marilyn either. I'll grit my teeth and quietly correct you, but that's about it.
But the spelling. Marion. That's the guy's version. That's the county Indianapolis is in. Did you know that John Wayne's given name was Marion? There's some Marian trivia for you.
My grandmother, God rest her soul, used to write stuff to me on cards and start with "Marain -..." and then talk for about 3 paragraphs with no punctuation. That was always cute, but the misspelling of my name was quaint. That was Gramma.....I've seen some pretty strange ways to spell my name, but this one took the cake. It came from a developer who is working on a project with me sort of indirectly. How did he spell it?
Murrain
Never seen that one...of course he has an unusual way to spell his name (Gregg with 2 g's) so maybe I'll come back with my own variation. Grugg or something? Wonder if he'd notice...
Until something p**sses me off again....this rant is over.
Blog is published randomly when I feel like it. It might not always be sunshine and kittens but I do my best to keep politics, religion, racial issues, or anything considered 'edgy' out ot if. If I can't sit and talk about it amongst a mixed group of people from all over the scope of humanity, you won't find it here, and if you do, please call me on it.
